One of the most common practical questions from people considering tallow skincare: how does it fit with the rest of my routine? Can I layer sunscreen over it? Can I wear makeup? What about other actives I do not want to give up? Here is the complete layering guide.
The Fundamental Rule: Thinnest to Thickest
The standard skincare layering principle applies: apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency, with the most active ingredients closest to the skin. Tallow is relatively thick and occlusive, which means it goes near the end of the routine -- before sunscreen, after most serums and actives.
Morning Routine Layering
Step 1: Cleanse with the Wagyu Luxe Soap Bar. Pat to damp.
Step 2: Any water-based serums (vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid) if using. Apply while skin is still damp. Allow to absorb.
Step 3: Opulent Facial Elixir -- pea-size, warmed between fingertips, pressed into skin. Allow 5 minutes absorption.
Step 4: Mineral sunscreen. Apply generously. The tallow underneath does not interfere with SPF efficacy.
Step 5: Makeup as normal. Foundation and powder apply smoothly over fully absorbed tallow.
Evening Routine Layering
Step 1: Cleanse with the Wagyu Luxe Soap Bar.
Step 2: Any treatment actives (retinol alternatives, AHAs, peptide serums). The vitamin A already in tallow makes aggressive synthetic retinol largely unnecessary for most people.
Step 3: Opulent Facial Elixir on damp skin. Slightly more generous evening application.
What Does Not Work Well Under Tallow
Applying tallow over SPF is not recommended -- the tallow layer would reduce sunscreen effectiveness by diluting it. The correct order is always tallow then sunscreen, not sunscreen then tallow. This is the one sequencing rule that meaningfully affects efficacy rather than just texture.
