The Hidden Ingredients Damaging Your Skin Barrier

The Hidden Ingredients Damaging Your Skin Barrier

Emulsifiers are the compounds that hold oil and water together in a stable lotion or cream. Without them, oil and water would separate immediately. Every water-based skincare product contains them. They are so universal that most people have never thought to question them.

The research on what emulsifiers do to skin beyond their formulation function is worth examining.

What Emulsifiers Do in Formulations

Common cosmetic emulsifiers include polysorbate-20 and polysorbate-80 (derivatives of sorbitol and fatty acids treated with ethylene oxide), PEG compounds, cetearyl alcohol and ceteareth-20 combinations, and various glyceryl-based emulsifiers. Each one works by reducing the surface tension between oil and water molecules, allowing them to remain stably mixed.

What They Do to Skin

Emulsifiers do not stop working when they leave the bottle. Research has shown that several common cosmetic emulsifiers -- particularly polysorbate-based compounds -- penetrate the stratum corneum and interact with the skin's own lipid matrix. They reduce the skin's barrier integrity by the same mechanism they reduce surface tension in the bottle: by disrupting the lipid interface.

A 2013 study published in the British Journal of Dermatology demonstrated that emulsifiers in moisturizers can wash out the skin's own lipids during cleansing -- contributing to the increased transepidermal water loss that makes moisturizer dependency progressively worse over time.

Why Tallow Needs No Emulsifiers

Wagyu tallow is anhydrous -- no water in the formula. Without water, there is no need for emulsifiers to hold anything together. The Opulent Facial Elixir contains zero emulsifiers. Not because emulsifiers were carefully chosen and avoided -- but because the formula never needed them. Three ingredients: wagyu tallow, organic olive oil, lavender essential oil. All fats and oil-soluble compounds. No water. No emulsifiers.

The Opulent Facial Elixir contains no emulsifiers -- because an anhydrous formula never needs them.
