What Is CBD in Skincare? The Endocannabinoid System and Your Skin Explained

CBD -- cannabidiol -- entered the skincare market with significant hype and insufficient explanation. Most CBD skincare marketing tells you that CBD is anti-inflammatory and leaves it there. The Endocannabinoid System in Skin

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a biological regulatory network present throughout the human body. It consists of endocannabinoids (cannabinoids produced by the body itself), cannabinoid receptors (primarily CB1 and CB2), and the enzymes that synthesize and degrade endocannabinoids. The ECS was identified in the 1990s and has since been found in virtually every tissue system -- including, crucially, the skin.
