The CBD skincare market has grown faster than the quality standards needed to navigate it. With hundreds of CBD creams available at wildly varying price points and claims, most consumers have no framework for evaluating whether a product will actually deliver therapeutic CBD to the skin's cannabinoid receptors. Here are the five quality markers that separate genuinely effective CBD skincare from products riding the trend.
Quality Marker 1: Third-Party CBD Verification
CBD concentration claims are unregulated. A product labeled as containing 500mg of CBD may contain significantly more or less than that amount. Third-party lab testing -- with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) available to consumers -- verifies actual CBD content, confirms the absence of THC above legal thresholds, and checks for pesticide and heavy metal contamination. Any CBD skincare brand that does not provide a COA is asking you to trust a claim they have not verified.
Quality Marker 2: Lipid-Based Delivery Vehicle
CBD is fat-soluble. A lipid-based delivery vehicle -- ideally one with oleic acid as a dominant fatty acid -- is required for meaningful CBD penetration through the stratum corneum. Water-based emulsions dramatically reduce CBD bioavailability. Check the ingredient list: if water (aqua) appears early in the list, the delivery vehicle is suboptimal for CBD.
Quality Marker 3: No Seed Oil PUFA Oxidation
If the lipid component of the CBD cream is rosehip, sunflower, hemp seed, or another PUFA-rich seed oil, the formula is generating oxidative stress on inflamed skin that the CBD is trying to help. The lipid vehicle should be stable -- wagyu tallow, olive oil, or squalane are the appropriate choices for a CBD cream formulated for inflamed skin.
Quality Marker 4: No Unnecessary Preservatives or Emulsifiers
Preservatives are required in water-based formulas and disrupt the skin microbiome. Emulsifiers are required to combine oil and water phases and have been increasingly linked to skin barrier disruption. An anhydrous CBD formula -- one with no water requiring no preservatives and no emulsifiers -- provides therapeutic CBD without these additional topical inputs that work against skin health.
Quality Marker 5: Transparent Ingredient Sourcing
A CBD cream worth buying can tell you where its CBD comes from, what the extraction method was, whether it is full-spectrum or isolate, and why those choices were made. The same sourcing transparency that matters for food should apply to therapeutic skincare. Restore will provide complete sourcing transparency for every ingredient -- because the story behind the ingredients is part of the product.
