Does Tallow Clog Pores? The Answer Depends on What Kind of Tallow

The most common question from people considering tallow skincare who have acne-prone or congested skin: does it clog pores? The short answer is that quality tallow from ruminant animals does not clog pores for the majority of people. The longer answer involves understanding what makes tallow comedogenic or non-comedogenic, and why the quality of the tallow matters enormously.

What Comedogenicity Actually Means

Comedogenicity is a measure of an ingredient's tendency to block pores and contribute to comedone (blackhead and whitehead) formation. It is measured on a scale of 0 to 5, where 0 is non-comedogenic and 5 is highly comedogenic. The rating depends primarily on the fatty acid composition of the oil or fat in question.

Oils high in oleic acid tend to have low comedogenic ratings. Oils high in linoleic acid are more comedogenic. Oils high in lauric acid (like coconut oil) are highly comedogenic. Tallow's dominant fatty acids -- oleic, palmitic, and stearic -- all have low to moderate comedogenic ratings.

Why Quality and Rendering Matter

Low-quality tallow -- poorly rendered, from grain-fed conventional cattle, or inadequately purified -- retains more impurities and may have a different fatty acid profile than properly rendered grass-fed or wagyu tallow. The impurities in low-quality tallow are more likely to contribute to pore congestion than the fat itself. This is the most likely explanation for the minority of people who report breaking out on tallow: they used low-quality, poorly rendered product.

The Adjustment Period Confusion

Some people experience temporary congestion in the first one to two weeks of switching to tallow skincare. This is often the skin purging -- clearing existing congestion that was already forming under the skin surface. This is different from the tallow causing new comedone formation. True comedogenicity produces ongoing, persistent breakouts. An initial purge that resolves within two weeks is a different phenomenon.

Who Should Be Cautious

People with very oily, congested skin who are acne-prone should start with a small amount of tallow on a limited area and observe for two weeks before committing to full facial use. For most people, even those with acne-prone skin, wagyu tallow's sebum-compatible fatty acid profile is well-tolerated and often improves acne over time by normalizing sebum production and reducing the inflammatory environment that drives acne.
