What Palmitic Acid Is

When palmitic acid is depleted from the skin barrier -- whether through harsh surfactants that strip the surface lipids, through aging (which reduces ceramide synthesis), or through the use of skincare that does not replace what is lost -- the structural integrity of the ceramide bilayers is compromised. Palmitic acid is a saturated fat. In the post-1960s cultural climate that demonized all saturated fats as unhealthy, palmitic acid became collateral damage despite its essential role in human biology. A saturated fatty acid that the body already produces and that has been in skin since the beginning of human existence is not marketable in this framework.
