What Is Transepidermal Water Loss and Why Tallow Addresses It Better Than Most Moisturizers

Transepidermal water loss -- TEWL -- is the measurement dermatologists and skin scientists use to quantify how much water is escaping through the skin barrier. It is measured in grams per square meter per hour (g/m²/h), and it is one of the most reliable objective indicators of skin barrier health. When TEWL is high, the barrier is compromised and moisture is escaping faster than it should. When TEWL is low, the barrier is intact and retaining moisture effectively.

What Drives High TEWL

Water evaporates from the skin surface continuously. How Conventional Moisturizers Address TEWL
