What Is Transepidermal Water Loss? The Science Behind Winter Skin

Transepidermal water loss -- TEWL -- is the passive evaporation of water through the skin surface that happens continuously, whether you can feel it or not. It is the fundamental mechanism behind dry skin, behind the tight feeling after washing, and behind why winter makes every skin concern worse. Understanding TEWL explains why most moisturizers fail and what actually fixes dry skin at the source.

How TEWL Works

The skin's outermost layer -- the stratum corneum -- functions as a semi-permeable barrier. It slows the evaporation of water from the living layers of the skin below while allowing some moisture exchange with the environment. The rate at which water passes through this barrier and evaporates from the skin surface is TEWL.

In healthy skin with an intact lipid barrier, TEWL is low -- the barrier effectively slows moisture evaporation. In compromised skin -- from harsh cleansers, cold weather, over-exfoliation, or lipid deficiency -- TEWL increases. Higher TEWL means faster moisture loss, which manifests as the tightness, flakiness, and discomfort of dry skin.

Why Winter Increases TEWL

Cold air has significantly lower absolute humidity than warm air. The humidity gradient between the skin surface and the surrounding air drives TEWL -- the greater the difference between skin moisture and ambient air moisture, the faster water evaporates from the skin. Winter air, both outdoors and indoors with heating, creates the maximum humidity gradient and therefore the maximum TEWL rate.

Cold temperatures also reduce the enzymatic activity that synthesizes barrier lipids in the stratum corneum. The skin produces fewer ceramides and free fatty acids in winter, which structurally compromises the barrier precisely when environmental conditions are driving the highest TEWL.

What Reduces TEWL -- The Only Real Fix

TEWL is reduced by one mechanism: repairing and reinforcing the lipid barrier of the stratum corneum. Water-based moisturizers add water that evaporates and temporarily reduces the humidity gradient at the surface, but they do not repair the barrier architecture that controls TEWL rate. Humectants slow the rate slightly by binding water at the surface but do not rebuild the lipid matrix.
